Reduce the Signs of Aging with Dermal Fillers
If fine lines and wrinkles have you feeling down, it may be time to explore injectable dermal fillers as an option for restoring the youthful and vibrant appearance of your skin. Ideal for reversing some of the most common signs of aging (including laugh lines and facial creases), dermal fillers are a viable option for many people.
What Are Dermal Fillers?
Specifically, dermal fillers are an injectable treatment that adds volume and fullness to the skin. Many dermal fillers contain substances to “plump” the skin, such as calcium hydroxyapatite and polylactic acid.
Perhaps the most notable ingredient found in dermal fillers, however, is hyaluronic acid; this is a substance that is naturally found in soft tissues throughout the body and is responsible for making skin appear smooth and full. By injecting hyaluronic acid under the surface of wrinkled and/or sagging skin, the results can be incredible.
There are many different types of dermal fillers, each with different ingredients and the potential for different results. Some of the more common brands of dermal fillers available today include Juvéderm, Radiesse, Restylane, Sculptra, and Bellafill.
What is the Difference Between Botox and Dermal Fillers?
Because both Botox and dermal fillers involve the use of injections to improve the appearance of the skin, they are often mistaken to be the same thing. In reality, there are some major differences between Botox and dermal fillers. Specifically, Botox is used to more-or-less freeze the muscles underneath the surface of the skin, which in turn prevents wrinkles and fine lines caused by facial expressions from forming.
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, do not “freeze” the muscles or prevent the patient from making facial expressions. Instead, dermal fillers inject hyaluronic acid underneath the surface of the skin to fill out sunken, creased, or sagging areas and restore a more youthful appearance.
How Safe Are Dermal Fillers?
As is the case with any cosmetic procedure, there are some potential risks and side effects that come along with dermal fillers. In general, dermal filler injections are considered to be very safe—but some potential side effects can include:
● skin rash
● temporary redness or bruising
● loss of blood flow to the injected area
Do Dermal Fillers Really Help Remove Superficial Wrinkles?
While not a permanent solution, dermal fillers that are properly placed and injected can absolutely reduce the appearance of superficial wrinkles on the face. And unlike more drastic procedures (like a traditional facelift), fillers are minimally invasive and typically don’t take more than a few minutes to have done in the office.
How Long Will Dermal Fillers Last?
The length of time you can expect dermal fillers to last can vary based on many factors, including the location of the injection and your own skin characteristics. In general, however, you can expect a single round of dermal filler injections to last anywhere from six months to two years. From there, dermal filler treatments can be repeated as necessary to maintain your desired appearance.
